I am supposed to be writing about my giveaway, but my heart is filled with sadness for the families affected by yesterday’s tragedy. I’ve been glued, in disbelief, to the news coverage the last 24 hours.
As a parent, my heart aches for the families, and for the precious angels taken too soon. I can’t begin to imagine that kind of pain.
As a former teacher, I was struck by the bravery of the teachers, especially Victoria Soto, who lost her life protecting her students. I can’t imagine how scary that would be, and having to put on a brave face for the students. All of the teachers and administration are heroes.
It was great to see the town immediately coming together, and how the various churches offered services and support last night. A couple people said, “It will be okay,” while hugging. I don’t know if the families believe that right now, but the community was certainly embracing and supporting them.
Last week my childhood friends also lost their two year old daughter in a car accident after a man ran a red light during a police chase. Another senseless act that is just heartbreaking. I can’t even try to wrap my brain around it.
They talked about being so touched by all the community support. Thousands of people, some of whom they’ve never met, have rallied around them with emotional and monetary support. They described it as being “blanketed with love.” It seems almost impossible that anything could help them in a time like this, but God is using people to help them get through it, and I guess that’s our hope.
Like everyone else, I’ve been hugging my kids a little tighter this last week, but it’s also challenged me to think about ways that I can support others, not just in times of tragedy, but in everyday experiences.
May God bless the CT families and provide that blanket of love during this awful time.
