We had two days (two days!) to make my sister’s dorm feel like home. And if you’ve been to a dorm recently, it takes some work to make it feel a little less depressing. Luckily, she picked out a great bedspread so we had some cheery colors to work with. We made a few trips to Target, Home Goods and Michael’s to fill in the blanks.
First project: big blank wall over her bed. I picked up the canvases and some scrapbook paper from Michael’s. I trimmed the scrapbook pages and then mod podged them. My sister liked the pink color, but we thought it needed something more so we added some rose decals we got from Target.
Before she left for college, I sewed the throw pillows to match her bedspread. It was my first round pillow, which was a little dicey at times, but it turned out okay. I used the extra fabric to cover (mod podged underneath) over her bulletin board.
I saw this round collage frame at Target and loved it, but it had a lot of photo spots, which could end up looking busy so we filled it with scrapbook paper and photos to mix it up.
I was glad that Michael’s had the gray shadow boxes that I had seen at Hobby Lobby. I backed it with scrapbook paper and then mod podged a “j” with white tissue paper. My sister attached the “j” with a couple command strips (love those).
This was one of my favorite finds…it’s a wasp catcher. Yes, a wasp catcher. It was the only one there, and, even better, it was on sale for $6 at Home Goods. I got the flowers from Michael’s, and a friend gave us the glass beads to fill in the bottom.
We found the “faith, hope and love” decal at Target. She added the string lights and the lamp, which was much better than the bright florescent lights.
Most colleges don’t allow candles so we got her the flameless kind, and hers are also controlled by a remote and set on a timer. She moved the “chandelier” over her desk when she got a signed copy of a poster of an Angel’s player (can’t blame her).
Thanks for stopping by Time to DIY!
