For our first MOPS (mothers of preschoolers) craft we did these glass tile pendants that are all over Pinterest. I used the tutorial from Sugar Bee Crafts and, as she suggested, ordered the supplies from CandyTiles on etsy.
These are easy to make and under $2, perfect for MOPS.
CandyTiles sells the supplies in bundle packs so you can order in bulk and get most of what you need:
- Glass tile (you only need one for the pendant)
- Bail (or “hook you put the chain through,” for the non-jewelry makers like me)
- Chain
- Diamond glaze (to seal the paper to the glass tile)
Not included: Paper to put on the glass tile (scrapbook paper or a photo, some tutorials even suggested fabric) and super glue to attach the bail.
I provided the moms with a variety of scrapbook paper to choose from, or they emailed me a photo to resize. I used Sugar Bee Craft’s tutorial on how to resize a photo, and printed two copies (just in case) on white card stock at Staples. It looks SO much better on a laser printer, and it was only $1 to print two copies. Don’t cheap out on this step.
On to the craft day…
They used the glass tile to trace the square on the paper.
Then cut it. Some tutorials suggest an x-acto knife, but scissors worked just fine.
Then “glued” it with the diamond glaze. We found it was best to put a small drop (Sugar Bee said “pea size” and don’t go over that) diamond glaze on the tile, brush it over the tile (see tip below), and then place the square on top. Once it’s dry you can put another coat of diamond glaze over it for extra seal.
One of our awesome Mentor Moms is using a brush, but we later found that the best way is to brush it on with your finger because the brush often created streaks on the paper. Or maybe it’s because they were cheap brushes. Who knows.
An additional step (some of the moms thought of it) is to add another scrapbook paper design on the back instead of the white back showing. It also makes it reversible. I chose a photo for mine, and wish that I would have done that so I could have a design as well.
The final step is to attach the bail with super glue. Do NOT use gorilla glue because it expands.
Here are the finished products…
I loved this one. She was creative and used three different scrapbook paper designs and cut out the initials. Not sure if they are hers or her kids’, but I love it either way.
I liked the circle designs one in this set. She wasn’t sure that design would work at first, but she figured out a way.
Love the two brothers photo. So awesome that she could capture that precious moment.
And these are all the other cute samples…
The shoes are upside down in this one. It’s done correctly in real life, but we were rushing to get a photo before it was finished. It was a cute idea to use a photo of her son’s feet (in shoes).
For mine, I used an Instagram photo (used PicFrame to put the photos together). It looks a lot like a regular black & white design from far away, which I like. I think I’m going to give it to my mom because she was at the beach that day.
Loved this craft for MOPS! Thanks to Sugar Bee Crafts for the great tutorials.
