This was my blah guest room…and note the blah white IKEA dresser that needed a makeover.
During my daily Pinterest perusal, a few things caught my eye so I started a Guest Room board. I was inspired by this lovely navy chest of drawers (scroll down a bit to see). It looked a little like mine, except mine was from IKEA and has a lot less character. Oh well. I’m not buying any new furniture for the guest room, but I can paint it!
I loved the base midnight/navy blue color and decided to use that as an accent color in the guest room because I had a couple other blue travel souvenir items.
Before heading to the paint store, I read Centsational Girl’s (she’s one of my faves) tips on painting furniture.
I went with the Benjamin Moore Advance in Old Navy, and bought a Purdy brush.
The paint specialist talked me out of a Minwax as a top coat – he said three coats of the Advance would be fine.
I set up in my living room on a Saturday and pulled the drawers out for the first two coats. I skipped the primer step because it was already white. I let it dry a couple hours before beginning the next coat.
I put the drawers back in for the final coat, and I did the top with a fourth coat since that surface would be used a little more.
Now that it had a new paint job, it needed some new hardware. Here are the old knobs (blah)…
Not so pretty. So I went to Hobby Lobby to get some new ones (at 50 percent off, of course).
I didn’t want a lot of gold, and this was almost a little too much, but I liked the glass look.
I put the knobs on and had a “brand new” chest of drawers…I could probably put some feet on it to dress it up even more. Hmmmm…
There are some new elements in the guest room, which I will be blogging about later.
Thanks for stopping by Time to DIY!
