Felt Flower Christmas Wreath

I love wreaths and look for any excuse to make them. I’m currently considering one for the basement door, but figured making one for a silent auction would be better use of my time. My original vision didn’t work out, but I revised it and used a couple things I had on hand to make this one.

I started with two pieces of red and white felt, one piece of green felt, a wreath, pearls, ribbon, scissors and a glue gun. Ribbon was switched out later for red and white yarn, and the green felt was never used.

Hobby Lobby sells these wreaths for $4.99 and they are $8.99 at Michael’s.

I started by making the felt flowers. I’m sure there is a professional way to make felt flowers, but this is how I make them.

Cut a circle first. As you can see, the circle doesn’t have to be perfect. A mouse ear type thing is fine.

Starting from the outside, cut around the circle like you’re making your way into the circle’s abyss. I cut a scalloped edge to help it look more like a flower later.

Cut all the way to the center, and now it’s ready to assemble into a flower.

Pinch the center piece together.

And then start wrapping it around and around and around.

The scalloped edge will make it look a little more like a flower. (By the way, I know these pictures are so overexposed…don’t even ask).

You could hot glue the inside as your wrapping, but I’ve always just hot glued at the very end because it will be glued again to the wreath anyway.

Oops, the secret’s out: I used my husband’s Travel Leisure mag as a glue gun mat.

When a few flowers are done, place them on the wreath to see what sizes and how many more you’ll need.

Once I’ve made all of them and like the placement, I glue the bottom and place on the wreath. Press down for a couple seconds to make sure you get a good seal.

Then it’s time for my favorite part: pearlize the flowers.

I use scissors to cut the pearls (you can buy these pearls in the fake flower or wedding section). For this wreath I only put them on the red flowers. I like the pearls, but I use them sparingly so it’s not too pearly and busy.

Hot glue the bottom of the pearl and the stick.

And place in the middle of the flower. Push down enough so you know the glue is hitting the felt.

Now it’s time for the yarn wrap. This is where I ditched the ribbon (not sure what I was thinking) and went with some red and white yarn instead. Start by tying it off in the back of the wreath.
