My cousin Carina has gotten into yarn-wrap felt flower wreaths and she decided to make them for a few of her family members this year. I loved the different designs she created so of course I had to feature them in this 12 Days of Homemade Holiday Gifts series. What perfect gifts!
Inspired by this wreath on Etsy, she created five different designs.
She used the straw wreaths. You can also use a styrofoam wreath, but she liked how the straw wreath was a little thicker. Make sure you leave the plastic wrap on the wreath before wrapping the yarn because it will hold in the straw pieces a little better.
You can use any type of yarn, but when you tighten the yarn, it makes it a lot thinner so thicker yarn is a little easier because it will wrap faster.
To start, she made a ball with the yarn (it needs to be about twice this size to cover the whole wreath).
After doing a marathon run of five yarn wraps–she got really good at it and knocked them out in an hour–she said the trick is to put the wreath between your legs and wrap with the ball of yarn.
She tightened the yarn as she went around.
Then she pushed them toward the others. Some will overlap a bit, but that’s okay because it will make it thicker.
For the felt flowers, she used a few tutorials.
- A variety of felt flowers from Little Things Bring Smiles
- Pom Pom (or loopy felt) flower from Craft Snob
- Felt bloom flower from Keeping Life Creative
Here are her beautiful creations…
I love the little berries and striped ribbon.
She made the ends symmetrical with the three small flowers on each side. Love those big flowers, too.
This one is so pretty, and would be really cute for Valentine’s Day, too.
This one is similar to the first one except she changed the side of the flowers and changed up the red yarn placement.
My favorite. Love the variety of big flowers.
The aunts will love these wreaths and I know she put a lot of time and love into them. Can’t wait to see pics of them up on their doors!
